overview a split payment order is an order that was paid using more than one payment method this most commonly occurs when a customer uses a combination of a primary payment method (such as credit card, debit card, paypal, afterpay, or zip) alongside a gift card or store credit when a refund is issued on a split payment order, shopify determines how the refund amount is allocated across the original payment methods this logic can be adjusted how refunds are applied when a standard refund is processed shopify provides a recommended refund split across the original payment methods by default, the refund amount is proportionalised based on how much each payment method contributed to the original order each payment method receives a portion of the refund relative to its share of the total payment for example, if an order was paid 70% by card and 30% by gift card, a refund will be split across those payment methods in the same proportions payment method prioritisation refundid allows payment methods to be prioritised during refunds this means you can choose to refund one payment method first that payment method will be refunded up to its available amount once it is exhausted, the refund will move on to the next payment method this is useful if you want refunds to be issued back to specific payment methods before others to set up payment method prioritisation, please reach out to your account manager or merchant support important limitations you cannot refund more than the amount originally paid on any single payment method you will be shown how much you are able to refund to a specific payment method on the refundid processing pop up refunds are limited to the available balance on each payment method if a payment method has already been fully refunded, it cannot be used again
