Gift Card Refunds

overview this document explains how refunds are handled when the original payment method is a gift card gift card refunds behave differently to card or alternative payment method refunds, as refunded funds are returned to the original gift card rather than being issued as a new gift card or paid out in cash shopify does not allow for gift card orders to be refunded to a customer's card how gift card refunds work when a refund is issued and the original payment method was a gift card the refunded amount is returned to the original gift card no new gift card is created the balance of the existing gift card is increased by the refunded amount this ensures the customer retains access to their original gift card balance gift card codes and customer access refundid does not have access to gift card codes this means refundid cannot display or resend the gift card code directly the gift card code can be re sent to the customer via shopify only the customer can view the gift card code once it has been issued to resend the gift card, click the send gift card button on the gift card integration considerations some external integrations may behave differently and issue a new gift card when processing a gift card refund this behaviour depends on your specific integration setup if you want refunds for gift card orders to always issue a new gift card , you should use a store credit (gift card) resolution instead of a standard refund resolution
