overview this document explains how standard refunds issued through refundid are displayed and recorded in shopify it covers how refunds appear on the order, how refund statuses are updated, and how refunded amounts are handled within shopify payouts refund visibility on the order when a refund is issued through refundid the refunded amount is applied directly to the original shopify order refund deductions are visible in the order timeline at the bottom of the order the refund breakdown within the order details refunds will have a reason attached to them indicating which rma they're attached to the order status will update based on the refunded amount partially refunded if only part of the order value is refunded refunded only if the full order value, including original shipping, is refunded if outbound shipping is retained and not refunded, the order will remain in a partially refunded state if the native shopify return functionality is being used, the status will display return closed as well as refunded or partially refunded please note that once a refund is issued through shopify, you are unable to reverse it original payment method refunds are final tags and notes refundid automatically applies identifiers to refunded orders, including notes on the order to provide additional context tags indicating a refund has been processed a tag applied at the time of return lodgement to indicate refundid involvement these identifiers help with tracking, reporting, and reconciliation payment method and payouts refunds are automatically issued back to the original payment method used on the order refunded amounts are deducted from your shopify balance the deduction appears in your next shopify payout cycle or is offset against available funds, typically the following day to learn more about how refunds are handled if multiple payment methods are used, check out the split payment orders docid\ bynndik2qztmqj7iutvcb guide errors with refunds occasional errors can occur when refunding back through to shopify cannot refund more items than were purchased this error indicates that refundid is attempting to refund the items in shopify yet they no longer exist in the order in shopify or there are not enough funds left on the order to refund this might be the case if a refund was manually issued directly in shopify outside of refundid unable to refund this error indicates a problem downstream with the payment method that was used for the order it might be related to the payment method having an outage, or it having been removed from your shopify store if you're unsure if this applies to you, find the order in shopify and go to the event log if you see an error message that says unable to refund with red text, this applies to you to solve this, expand the notification by clicking the arrow beside the text and locate the error message you may be required to refund this order manually within the payment methods portal and outside of shopify
