Return Fees & Deductions

overview this document explains how return fees and deductions are handled when store credit is issued instead of a refund unlike standard refunds, store credit does not return funds to the original order as a result, return fees and deductions are not recorded on the shopify order itself and are instead reflected in the final store credit amount issued to the customer how deductions are applied when a return is approved with store credit selected refundid calculates the total return value any applicable deductions (such as return shipping fees or return reason fees) are applied store credit is issued for the net amount after deductions no refund is issued against the original order, so the deductions are not recorded in the return shipping fee section visibility in shopify because no funds are returned to the original order no return shipping charge is created on the shopify order no return fee line items appear on the order the original order remains unchanged from a financial perspective the only financial outcome is the issuance of store credit store credit issuance deductions are reflected by issuing a lower value gift card (or external store credit) to the customer for example approved return value $100 return fees and deductions $15 store credit issued $85 the customer only sees the final credit amount notes and audit trail although deductions are not recorded as line items on the order notes are added to provide context around the final credit amount any applied fees or deductions are documented for reference this ensures there is still a clear audit trail for the return
